This week has been quite the change in weather compared to last weeks taste of spring, we were at the park wearing tees and now I'm sending Jack outdoors in a Parka zipped up to his eyes... BUT on a positive note, this cold indoor weather has me finishing up a few DIY projects! So, today I'm going to share with you the weathered Galvanized Market Sign I created and I will even show the ~~mistake~~ change I made.

How to Make a Galvanized Market Sign with a Weathered Wood Technique

Step 1: Cut and sand a piece of barnboard or a wood plank. On the back attach your hanging hardware, I used two capsule bed connecting fittings aka keyhole fitting *This type of hardware is great because it will leave your sign hanging flush against the wall. Stain one coat onto the front of board, I used Early American by Minwax. Let dry 24 hours before applying paint.

Before the dry brushing techniqueStep 2: Using paint and a paint brush, apply a dry brush technique to create a weathered wood look. To achieve this look, you must slightly dip the bristle ends of your brush into the paint (use an old brush), then dab the brush onto the paint can lid or some sort of surface to remove any access paint. *Remember, you want to keep the brush dry.

Keep dry brushing until you achieve the look you want! Here is where I made my mistake: I was planning to add "farmers" with paint in a rustic distressed print in front of MARKET, but unfortunately once I completed this step I wasn't happy with the results... and to confirm my decision, Brent came home from work and looked up and said "Oh, that doesn't look very good", he is usually one to not comment much on my projects! SO I decided to get my electric sander out and try to remove the "farmers" part.

Step 3: Thankfully this barnboard is supposed to look weathered so that mess up added a little more character! After a lot of sanding and dry brush touchups, I spaced and hung the galvanized letters. Here's the improved Galvanized Market Sign! Now all we need to do is paint the existing cabinets, someday!The letters were purchased at Michaels. I'm not sure if they would have any left, I literally had to hunt down letters at multiple stores, and because I wanted to use my 50% coupons each time!
